The Hellen variety belongs to the Westerwold subspecies of Italian ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum ssp. westerwoldicum). It is a tetraploid form (4n), which is annual and does not require vernalization to transition to flowering, ensuring rapid development of the crop.

The plant possesses high productivity and is suitable for silage production, hay, and pasture use. The variety is distinguished by good leafiness and high nutritional value. During agronomic research, resistance to rust and Fusarium was recorded.
