Bastion is a tetraploid variety characterized by larger shoots, broad leaves, and increased forage value compared to diploid forms. The variety is distinguished by relatively rapid spring development and matures 10–14 days later than the Grimalda variety.

The plant possesses good lodging resistance and fairly high winter hardiness. The variety shows low susceptibility to crown rust and is rated as high-yielding.

The variety is intended for forage use, including grazing, hay harvesting, and silage production. Due to its high sugar content and quality characteristics, it is often used in grass mixtures with legumes, for example, clover.
