The variety was obtained in 1824 in the Althaldensleben nursery from seeds. It was initially named "Großer roter althaldensleber Pigeon", later it was renamed in honor of Johann Gottlob Nathusius. In literature, it is also found under the name "Lucas Taubenapfel".
The fruits are classified as dessert and culinary, distinguished by a spicy flavor with a characteristic cinnamon aftertaste. The consumption period extends from November to March. The variety is of historical significance and is often considered in the context of preserving regional genetic resources.
