The PREMA 96 variety is a fruit crop intended for commercial cultivation and market sale. It was bred in New Zealand by crossing the Royal Gala variety and the breeding line GS-2184.

This variety is widely known under the commercial name Rockit and is subject to protection under breeder rights legislation. Detailed agronomic descriptions of the plant's morphological characteristics are virtually absent from open sources.
