In international pomology, Prime Red is often a synonym for the Japanese variety Akane, obtained by crossing Jonathan and Worcester Pearmain. It is an early variety with medium-sized fruits of a round or flattened-conical shape. The skin is green-yellow with a bright red blush; the flesh is white, firm, and juicy; the taste is sweet-sour. The tree is self-incompatible, requires pollinators, and possesses moderate disease resistance.

The second meaning refers to an Italian breeding number developed by the University of Bologna through the hybridization of Prima and Summerred. This form was created within the framework of a breeding program for scab-immune varieties (Vf gene) with a compact spur-type growth habit and high fruit quality.
