The variety is distinguished by deep-set crowns: 61% are located at a depth of 2.5 to 3.8 cm, which protects the plant from damage by machinery, trampling by livestock, and low winter temperatures. The variety has a fall dormancy rating of 4.0 and demonstrates rapid regrowth after cutting.
The plant possesses high resistance to a wide range of pathogens, including bacterial wilt, Fusarium wilt, anthracnose, Phytophthora root rot, Aphanomyces root rot, and root-knot nematode. It is resistant to pea aphid, spotted alfalfa aphid, and stem nematode.
The variety is designed for 3–4 cut systems and intensive grazing. Due to its high adaptability and resistance to equipment traffic, FSG 408DP alfalfa is suitable for use both in pure stands and in hay-pasture mixtures.
