The Rila 544 variety belongs to the oriental tobacco type. It is widely used as a control sample in scientific research, where it is evaluated based on plant height, number and size of leaves, as well as yield and quality of dry raw material.

In breeding work, the variety is valued for its high general combining ability and is used as a parental form for developing lines resistant to diseases, in particular black shank. Also, modifications using cytoplasmic male sterility with the use of Nicotiana debneyi cytoplasm were obtained on its basis.
