Golden Rice is not a variety in the classical sense with fixed agronomic traits. Its essence lies in the introduction of genes (in particular, psy from daffodil or maize and crt1 from soil bacteria), which activate the biosynthesis of carotenoids in the edible part of the grain, giving it a yellow color.
Since this trait is transferred by breeding into popular local varieties, morphological characteristics, such as plant height or maturity group, depend entirely on the parent variety. Upon introgression into some high-yielding varieties, side effects may be observed: changes in leaf color, a decrease in plant height, and a drop in yield.
The variety is listed in the national registry — its seeds are authorized for sale in this country.
