The variety was discovered in 1903 in the province of Pavia as a result of a spontaneous mutation and received its name due to the dark color of the plant. It belongs to the medium-grain rice category.
The variety is a genetic ancestor of many modern varieties, including Vialone Nano and Carnaroli. Currently, the variety has been practically withdrawn from widespread agricultural use and is found primarily in niche farms.
In agronomic research, the variety is of interest for studying resistance to diseases, in particular to infestation by the nematode Aphelenchoides besseyi, which causes "white tip" disease of the leaf.
