The variety is of spontaneous origin and was discovered in rice fields in the Vercelli area. A distinctive morphological feature is the specific violet color of the grains and fresh leaves of the plant.
The grains of the variety are rich in phenolic compounds, with an anthocyanin content of 1000–1500 mcg/g. The concentration of these substances in the plant's leaves is 2–3 times higher than in the grain, which makes them potential industrial raw material for extraction.
The variety is used as a dietary product. Studies show that with certain cooking methods, a significant portion of the rice's antioxidant properties is retained.
