The variety is the result of the stabilization of a spontaneous mutation discovered in a rice field. A characteristic morphological feature is the natural purple color of both the grains and the vegetative parts of the plant, including the leaves.
The grain belongs to the medium size category with a length of about 6.3 mm, has an elongated shape, and lacks a central white part. Due to the high amylose content, the rice remains separate after cooking, which takes 35–40 minutes.
The product is whole-grain and contains a high level of anthocyanins, which provide antioxidant properties. The variety is used primarily as a side dish, as well as in salads and ethnic cuisine dishes.
