Groninger Strogele is an heirloom bean variety from the province of Groningen. The plant is of the bush type and is grown primarily for dry grain, which cooks down well, creating a thick consistency in soups.
The seeds are kidney-shaped, with a matte straw-yellow color and a brown eye, and have a 100-seed weight of about 60 grams. Harvesting is carried out in September-October, when the pods become dry and the seeds begin to rattle inside them.
The variety is genetically adapted to northern conditions and tolerates cold spring and the influence of sea winds well. In terms of growth habit and external characteristics, it is close to the Friese Woudboon variety, but differs from it in having larger seeds.
