The variety is used primarily as a valuable forage crop, often in combination with red clover. The cultivar is adapted to temperate climate conditions and demonstrates good winter hardiness in the regions of Northern Europe.
During studies conducted in the Czech Republic from 2008 to 2010, the Ragnar variety was noted for having a low level of infection with the fungal disease known as choke (Epichloë typhina).
