The Kayanne variety belongs to the semi-leafless type, where leaflets are reduced to tendrils due to the afila gene, which increases the plants' lodging resistance. The variety has the ability to maintain yield during short-term drought in the pre-flowering period due to the efficient regulation of nitrogen nutrition and the regeneration of root nodules.
In scientific literature, the variety often serves as a model organism for studying the genetics and physiology of peas and is also used in breeding programs as a source of valuable traits. It served as a parent line in the development of other varieties, specifically the Kameleon pea.
