Sörmländsk bönärt belongs to the gray pea (gråärt) group. The plant is medium-tall, reaching a height of about 150 cm and requires the use of supports during cultivation.
The flowers of the variety have a lilac-violet color; the pods are arranged in pairs. The seeds are large, green-brown in color with a characteristic black spot. The taste is described as astringent.
The variety is traditionally used in cooking for preparing soups and stews, and is also suitable for processing into flour. As part of biodiversity conservation efforts, the variety is maintained as a traditional genetic resource.
