ActivePrunus avium (L.) L. · Sweet cherry

10 August 2026
The rootstock was developed at the East Malling Research Station and is used in commercial horticulture due to its good compatibility with most varieties and its ability to ensure high-quality nursery plants. It propagates well vegetatively, forming a developed root system.
Trees on this rootstock are characterized as semi-dwarfing, reaching from 1/2 to 2/3 the size of trees on wild cherry seedlings. The rootstock is winter hardy and possesses resistance to bacterial canker, but has a shallow root system and low drought tolerance, requiring regular irrigation.
The rootstock is compatible with most commercial varieties, with the exception of certain incompatible varieties such as Hedelfińska, Sam and Van. The common naming of the rootstock as a "columnar variety" is an incorrect use of terminology.
