Barrier 1 is a hybrid of peach (Prunus persica) and Prunus davidiana. The variety is intended exclusively for use as a rootstock for peach and nectarine crops.

The plant is characterized by very high vigor, exceeding the performance of standard rootstocks such as Lovell. Trees grafted onto it often produce larger fruits with high flesh firmness; however, harvest maturity may be delayed, and the sugar content in the fruits may be reduced.

The rootstock demonstrates resistance to soil fatigue, which allows for planting in areas where stone fruit crops were previously grown. Use of the variety requires preliminary study of adaptation to local soil and climatic conditions.
