The variety is a Sicilian landrace, historically cultivated in the provinces of Syracuse and Ragusa. Trees are characterized by an early flowering type, which limits their cultivation to warm coastal areas, and by self-incompatibility, requiring the presence of pollinator varieties.
The fruits have a very hard and thick shell, which provides natural protection against pests. The trees are notable for their hardiness and are capable of developing without supplementary irrigation. Kernels are characterized by a large size with an average weight of about 1.8 g and an elliptical or elongated shape.
The variety is widely used in the confectionery industry for the production of marzipan, nougat, and almond milk. Studies show a high concentration of biologically active components, such as triterpenoids and hydroxycinnamic acids, in the pericarp of the crop.
