The variety was obtained as a result of a breeding program in North Carolina under the breeding number NC6753. It was created to provide the local market with fresh produce without the need for long-distance transportation.
Whynot belongs to the group of very early varieties; fruit ripening begins on May 16. The main characteristic of the variety is its pronounced resistance to bacterial spot (Xanthomonas arboricola pv. pruni), which allows for a reduction in the volume of chemical treatment of the plantings.
