The plant is an evergreen shrub reaching a height of 3–4 meters in the wild. It possesses alternate leathery leaves of elliptical shape and funnel-shaped flowers of mauve-purple, pink, or violet color, gathered in dense inflorescences of 10–20 pieces.
The species is characterized by high winter hardiness (USDA zone 4) and requires acidic, well-drained soils. Flowering occurs in the spring period from April to June. The fruits are dry woody capsules. The plant is highly poisonous.
In horticulture, it is used as an ornamental crop in solitary and group plantings, as well as for creating hedges. Under unfavorable conditions, it can be affected by fungal diseases such as rust, cercosporosis, leaf spot, and gray mold.
