The plant is a spreading, often multi-stemmed evergreen shrub, reaching a height of 1.8 to 3 meters, in rare cases up to 6 meters. Leaves are simple, leathery, elliptic or oblong in shape, dark green in color with a glossy surface.

Flowers are funnel-shaped, colored in lavender-pink or purple-lilac tones and gathered in dense inflorescences of 15–20 pieces. The flowering period occurs from mid- to late spring.

The species possesses good winter hardiness (USDA zones 4–8), however, it is sensitive to soil drainage and susceptible to root rots during moisture stagnation. All parts of the plant are highly toxic; it is used exclusively for decorative purposes.
