The Malling Orion variety is known in scientific literature as a subject for raspberry genetic research. Specifically, it has been used in crosses to study genes responsible for resistance to the raspberry aphid Amphorophora idaei, and genes determining the dwarf habit of plants.
Studies indicate a high level of vitamin C content in the berries, which remains stable during storage. The fruit color is light red. The variety shows resistance to a number of pests, however, under certain conditions, it can be susceptible to powdery mildew.
