The winter rye variety «Riihi» was obtained as a result of the cross Anna × Jo3093. The plant is adapted to northern climate conditions and possesses high winter hardiness. In field trials, the variety showed resistance to infection by the fungus Microdochium nivale, the causative agent of snow mold.
In scientific research, the variety is used as a reference for the analysis of whole grain rye flour quality, including the study of enzyme activity, specifically α-amylase, and dietary fiber content. It also serves as a control sample in genetic studies.
The variety is intended for food use in the baking industry. Furthermore, experiments have been conducted on its cultivation in mixed crops to produce forage silage.
