Rosso Grosso is a historical variety, popular in Italy in the late 19th to the first half of the 20th century. The plant is of the indeterminate type, distinguished by vigorous growth and high productivity. Historically, it was used as the primary variety for the canning industry due to the dense and fleshy structure of its fruits.
The fruits are large, flattened in shape, and often have pronounced ribbing. In one cluster, 2 to 4 bright red fruits are formed. The variety is considered hardy and adapted to various conditions; some descriptions mention resistance to Fusarium and Verticillium.
The name Rosso Grosso is historically a collective term for a group of local Italian varieties of the Riccio di Parma type. Currently, the variety is preserved primarily by collectors as part of the agronomic heritage and is most often identified with beefsteak tomatoes of Italian origin.
