For the 1987 Dutch-bred variety, the origin is recorded via the crossing of the varieties Elvira and AM 66-42. The database also notes other varieties with the name Gigant: a German variety from 1938, obtained from the crossing of Hindenburg and Professor Gisevius, and a Dutch variety from 1971.
