The variety belongs to traditional folk varieties of the northern region. In Sweden, it is known as Blå Dalsland and also has many synonyms such as Kainuun musta, Kuusamon tumma, Lopen musta, Musta maatiainen, Musta peruna, Vanha musta and Svart Dalsland.
Tubers have a dark violet skin color and white flesh; the culinary type is characterized as floury. The variety possesses good keeping quality due to the slow sprouting of tubers.
The plant is susceptible to late blight of leaves, scab and potato virus Y.
