Variety description

10 August 2026

BMR2 is a mutant allele encoding the enzyme 4-coumarate:CoA ligase, which is involved in lignin biosynthesis. Visually, plants with this mutation are distinguished by the characteristic brown coloration of the leaf midrib.

The use of this mutation in breeding is aimed at increasing the nutritional value of forage crops by reducing lignin content and improving fiber digestibility. However, lower lignin levels can lead to a reduction in biomass, increased risk of lodging, and changes in plant resistance to stress factors.

In commercial catalogs, the BMR2 designation often indicates the presence of this genetic line within a hybrid intended for improving forage quality, rather than the existence of an independent variety.
