The variety is used in global breeding practice as a genetic standard for testing the resistance of new hybrids to the pathogen Peronospora effusa. It serves as a benchmark for the identification of different races of downy mildew.

Modern aggressive races of the pathogen, including Pfs: 16, are capable of infecting this variety. The primary purpose of the variety is its use as a differential host in the study of diseases and in molecular genetic research, including genomic projects.
