The spring wheat variety Tjalve was bred by the Weibullsholm plant breeding institute in Sweden. In the 1990s, the variety held dominant positions in production in Norway and was also widespread in Finland and the Baltic countries.
The plant possesses high baking characteristics, which is due to the specifics of its genetic composition, in particular the presence of specific 5+10 glutenin subunits. The variety has repeatedly been the subject of scientific studies of genetic resources, including the study of disease resistance.
