The Gallareta variety (also known as Altar C84) was developed with the participation of the international center CIMMYT. Its pedigree includes a combination of the lines Ruff/Flamingo-DR//Mexicali. C75/3/Shearwater. The crop is traditionally used in the food industry for the production of pasta and couscous.

The plant possesses the leaf rust resistance gene Lr72, which provided protection to the crop over a long period of time until new virulent races of the pathogen emerged. In scientific publications, the variety is considered more as a reference sample for genetic research than as a commercial one.
