The variety Lira was developed in Italy in 1985 by crossing Mandon and FD 1104 lines. This variety is an object of study in scientific literature concerning the genetic diversity of durum wheat.

In official documents, the variety name may be mentioned alongside the abbreviation EPAC, which is not part of the name, but indicates the Portuguese state company that regulated the grain market in the 1980s.
