The variety is an ancient landrace type of wheat that has been cultivated for centuries in the Western Mediterranean countries. The plant is characterized by a tall stem and forms amber vitreous grain containing a high amount of protein.
This landrace possesses strong immunity to diseases and high tolerance to heat and drought, however, it may be sensitive to soil salinity. In traditional farming, the grain is used for the production of semolina, couscous, bulgur, bread, and pasta.
In modern science, the variety's genome has been fully sequenced. The variety is used as an important source of genetic material for breeding programs to develop new varieties resistant to adverse climatic conditions.
