The Platani variety was created by specialists at the Consortial Experimental Station for Cereal Science of Sicily. It represents an example of breeding work aimed at increasing yield and grain quality compared to local wheat populations.

The variety has repeatedly been the subject of comparative studies by Italian scientists who have examined its morphophysiological and agronomic indicators. In publications, it is mentioned in the context of the region's breeding progress in the second half of the 20th century.
