Sammartinara is a historical population adapted to Mediterranean conditions and is not a product of targeted modern breeding. In a number of regions, the variety is also known by the name Regina or Regina Sammartinara.

Plants of this variety are distinguished by significant height, which leads to poor lodging resistance. According to morphological traits, the variety has a lax ear and is historically classified as late-maturing.

The variety possesses specific adaptation to the biotic and abiotic stresses of the regional climate. At present, it is used primarily in organic agriculture and in breeding programs as a genetic resource.
