The variety was bred by the Cereal Institute in Thessaloniki based on genetic material from the Mediterranean basin using CIMMYT breeding programs. Genetic studies indicate the identity of the Selas variety with some other Greek varieties, such as Mexicalli, Pontos, and Anna.

The variety possesses adaptability to various climatic conditions, including cold zones. It is intended primarily for the food industry, in particular for the production of pasta.
