The variety has Spanish roots and originates from the vicinity of the city of Sagunto. It is classified as a wine grape variety, widely known as one of the key components of the GSM blend. Within the European Union, including Malta, the name Kaldaretta is officially recognized as one of the permissible names for this variety.
The plant's leaves are rounded and weakly lobed. The bunches are compact, conical in shape, medium-sized, and weigh approximately 240 g. The berries are small, rounded, and almost black in color with juicy flesh, the taste of which can be bitter.
The variety is characterized by late bud break and late ripening. It is demanding regarding growing conditions, preferring clay or limestone soils and a hot climate, while it can show sensitivity to drought. The produce is valued for its high tannin levels and is used for the production of red, rosé, and fortified wines.
