The variety has ancient origins and is typical of northwestern Spain and northern Portugal. The culture is characterized by dark-colored skin with non-pigmented berry pulp, moderate vigor, and average yield. The ripening cycle of the variety is long.

The plant possesses drought tolerance, as well as good resistance to powdery mildew and a number of other fungal diseases. Wines from this variety are distinguished by their intense color, high natural acidity, and potential for long aging.

The tasting characteristics of the wines are dominated by notes of ripe black and red fruits, balsamic tones, and nuances of spices. The variety has historically been used in blends, however, it has recently become sought after for the creation of varietal wines.
