The variety is autochthonous to Austria and is genetically related to the Pinot family. The variety's name is associated with Saint Lawrence's Day, when the berries begin to change color. The vine is vigorous, with five-lobed dark green leaves and bisexual flowers.

Bunches are medium-sized, dense, and conical in shape. The berries are dark blue, almost black, with thick skins. The variety is demanding of growing conditions and is sensitive to spring frosts and unfavorable weather during flowering, which can reduce yields. Frost resistance reaches -20...-23°C.

It prefers deep soils and is sensitive to water stagnation, which causes chlorosis. Wines made from this variety are characterized as deep and velvety, with the potential for long aging.
