This line was developed based on local open-pollinated maize populations collected in northwestern Spain in 1970–1976. It is used in scientific breeding programs for studying heterosis, combining ability, and feed quality, rather than for direct sowing as a commercial variety.

The characteristics of this line are experimental in nature and are determined within the framework of internal laboratory studies. The designation EC18 is not a generally accepted agronomic variety.
