The line is characterized by high pollen production and the ability to form plants taller than some other breeding accessions. In hybrid combinations, the line allows for the harvest corresponding to approximately 112 days on the relative comparative maturity scale for grain moisture at harvest.
The breeding material is distinguished by small seeds and a high test weight. PH87P possesses resistance to ear mold, and as a component of hybrids, it exhibits resistance to Fusarium and leaf spot. The line is adapted to the conditions of the Central Corn Belt, as well as the south-central, southeastern, and western regions of the USA.
