The variety is a local heirloom cultivar historically grown in the Canavese region of Piedmont. It is a landrace population belonging to the flour corn type, the kernels of which possess high milling quality and impart a distinct taste to the flour.
Plants reach a height of 150–200 cm and belong to the late-maturing group. The ears are conical or cylindro-conical in shape. The semi-flint kernels have an elongated, sometimes beaked shape, and their color varies from yellow to red-orange depending on the ecotype.
The variety requires fertile, well-drained soils and regular irrigation, as it is sensitive to drought. Resistance to lodging is medium. Since it is an open-pollinated variety, it is recommended to plant the plants in blocks for effective cross-pollination.
