The causal agent of melon anthracnose is the fungus Colletotrichum orbiculare, also known by the synonym Colletotrichum lagenarium. The disease affects all aerial parts of the plant, leading to metabolic disturbances, stem fragility, and loss of fruit marketability.

Brown or reddish-brown spots, often surrounded by a halo, develop on the leaves; as the disease progresses, these spots coalesce, causing leaf blade necrosis. Elongated sunken lesions form on the stems, and rotting spots develop on the fruits, hindering sugar accumulation and normal crop growth.
