Fire blight of apple

The most dangerous bacterial disease of apple trees is fire blight, caused by the Gram-negative bacterium Erwinia amylovora, which affects all above-ground organs of the tree.

The pathogen Erwinia amylovora is characterized by strain variability and adaptability. It infects flowers, causing them to blacken and wilt, as well as young shoots, the tips of which characteristically curl into a 'shepherd's crook' shape. The leaves exhibit a 'scorched by fire' effect on the canopy, and under high humidity, a characteristic amber or brown exudate is secreted on affected branches and bark.

In apple breeding for fire blight resistance, the primary tool is the identification and use of quantitative trait loci (QTLs), such as QTL FBF7. For the selection of resistant genotypes, molecular markers are employed, including the SCAR and microsatellite markers AE10-375, GE-8019, and CH-F7-FB1.
