Lily flower diameter

When assessing the flower diameter of lilies, measurements are taken during full bloom on typical, fully opened flowers. Given the diversity of forms ranging from turkscap to flat, it is common to record not only the diameter but also the flower height or the diameter across the recurved petals, as the shape of the perianth significantly influences the final value.

Diameter values are directly dependent on the cultivar group: Asiatic hybrids are characterized by more compact dimensions, whereas Oriental and OT hybrids can reach up to 27 cm. Furthermore, there is a direct correlation between the size grade of the planting bulb and the plant's ability to realize its genetic potential for flower size.

In commercial floriculture, flower size serves as a defining criterion for market quality. Large-flowered cultivars have higher requirements for nutrition and growing conditions, as the process of inflorescence formation demands significant energy expenditure from the plant.
