A key morphological trait of Gladiolus, which determines the cultivar's class according to the international classification system.

Measurement of the diameter is performed on the lowermost, first floret in the inflorescence of open-field plants without forced opening of the petals. This metric determines the first digit in the three-digit cultivar code, dividing plants into five classes: miniature (less than 6.5 cm), small-flowered (6.4–9.0 cm), medium-flowered (8.9–11.5 cm), large-flowered (11.4–14.0 cm), and giant (more than 14.0 cm).

Flower size directly influences the ornamental and commercial value of a cultivar. When cultivating large-flowered and giant forms, stem strength is critically important, as massive inflorescences increase the risk of lodging. Realizing the potential of the flower diameter depends on the category of planting material, with the use of 'Extra' and first-size corms being preferred.
