A key morphological parameter for varietal identification and commercial evaluation of tulips, measured at the full flowering stage with petals in a horizontal position.

To assess tulip flower diameter during variety trials and DUS testing, a methodology is applied that requires positioning the petals horizontally. Measurements are conducted on a representative sample of 10 plants at the stage of commercial maturity. The assessment of the trait intensity is graded on a UPOV scale from small to large, with specific indicators depending on the biological characteristics of the tulip class.

In agronomic practice, flower diameter serves as an indicator of planting material quality. There is a direct correlation between bulb size and the plant's ability to realize its varietal potential for flower size: the use of small-sized bulbs leads to underdevelopment of the bud. For commercial products, large-flowered blooms are a determining factor in cut flower quality, and deviations in flower size from the variety's passport data serve as a marker of improper cultivation practices or the use of poor-quality bulbs.
