Fusarium Wilt of Sugar Beet

Beta vulgaris Sugar Beet Group

A fungal disease of sugar beet caused by a pathocomplex of soil-borne fungi of the genus Fusarium, affecting the vascular system and root tissues.

In the reference 58 varieties crop Sugar beet, where this is mentioned in the description.

The causative agents of the disease are soil-borne fungi, among which Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. betae is predominant, along with Fusarium solani, F. culmorum, F. avenaceum, and other species. Pathogens cause wilting and the development of root rots, while isolates provoking these symptoms may possess varying biological characteristics.

The aerial part of affected plants shows signs of yellowing and senescence of older leaves, often accompanied by the blackening of petioles. Inside the root, necrosis of the vascular bundles is observed, along with the appearance of cavities containing white or pink mycelium and intensive formation of secondary lateral roots against the background of suppressed primary growth.

Genetic control of resistance in sugar beet has been studied at the level of QTLs and individual defensive proteins. Acid chitinase genes (forms SE1 and SE2) and resistance gene analogs of the NBS-LRR family play a role in resistance, with their activity correlating with the plant's defensive response. Modern breeding utilizes marker-assisted selection based on loci on the 2nd and 7th chromosomes.
