Fusarium wilt of chickpea

Fusarium wilt of chickpea is a dangerous disease caused by the soil-borne fungus Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. ciceris, which affects the plant's vascular system at all growth stages.

The pathogen is represented by eight pathogenic races (0, 1A, 1B/C, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6) and two main pathotypes: 'wilt' and 'yellowing'. The pathogen survives in the soil for up to six years in the form of chlamydospores and spreads through crop residues and infected seeds.

Symptoms include seedling rot, root lesions, and tracheomycotic wilt, accompanied by loss of turgor and yellowing of leaves. A characteristic diagnostic feature is the browning of vascular bundles in a cross-section of the stem or root.

Genetic resistance of chickpea to this disease is controlled by major genes and quantitative trait loci (QTLs), which are identified using molecular markers for variety breeding.
