Fusarium Wilt of Flax

Linum usitatissimum L.

Fusarium wilt of flax is a dangerous tracheomycosis caused by the fungus Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. lini, manifesting as either wilt or boll infection. Resistance in cultivars is provided by dominant Fu genes 1 through 12, the effectiveness of which depends on temperature.

In the reference 86 varieties crop Common flax, where this is mentioned in the description.

The primary pathogen is Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. lini, which penetrates the vascular system through the roots, although other Fusarium species causing tissue and boll damage are also encountered. The disease manifests in two forms: tracheomycotic wilt, in which the tops curl, leaves turn yellow, and stems become brown, and surface infection, which leads to underdeveloped bolls with the formation of a pink coating.

In breeding practice, sets of differential cultivars and highly aggressive monoisolates, such as No. 39, are used to identify pathogen races. Genetic control of resistance is carried out by a series of dominant genes, designated Fu with the corresponding serial number. However, the expressivity of these resistance genes may decrease when air temperatures rise above 25 °C.
