Cultivation

Pot Gerbera culture

Gerbera L.

A specialized production method for Gerbera jamesonii focused on obtaining compact plants with a "bouquet-style" flowering habit. It differs from cut-flower forms through the use of dwarf hybrids, specific substrates, and the prohibition of overhead irrigation to protect the growing point from rot.

In the reference 41 varieties crop Gerbera, where this is mentioned in the description.

Breeding of pot gerberas is aimed at creating plants with a compact basal leaf rosette and proportional peduncles capable of abundant and synchronous flowering. Unlike cut-flower varieties, where the priority is peduncle length and productivity, pot forms are genetically programmed for the ornamental value of the entire plant as a single "living bouquet."

The cultivation technology requires strict control of substrate volume in 12–16 cm diameter pots, as excessive space provokes waterlogging and the development of root rots, such as Phytophthora, Fusarium, and Pythium. A mandatory condition is the avoidance of overhead irrigation, as moisture entering the leaf rosette causes the growing point to rot; therefore, watering is carried out strictly along the rim of the container or from the bottom.

Planting material for this sector is predominantly obtained via tissue culture, which ensures high genetic uniformity and synchronization of plant development within a batch. During the growing season, pot gerberas require the maintenance of a 12–14 hour photoperiod and protection from direct solar radiation, which can cause overheating of the root system and leaf blade scorch.
